QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Din and muftis of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: Am I allowed to clean the house during the night, because I heard that it is bad luck to clean the house during this time. Please can you advise us regarding this?

Questioner: Amjad from England

ANSWER:

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

It is permissible & commendable to clean the house at any given time, because cleanliness is a profoundly desirable act in Shar’īah. To the extent that our Beloved Prophet ﷺ has stated,

“الطُّهُورُ شَطْرُ الْإِيمَانِ”

“Purity is half of faith.”

[Sahīh Muslim, vol 1, pg 203, Hadīth no 223]

It has only been mentioned in some books that sweeping the house at night is among the causes of decrease in sustenance; although, sweeping is not actually impermissible. One should avoid unnecessarily sweeping the house during this time, as it is a cause of sustenance decreasing. Whereas, cleaning up at night is absolutely fine.
