Do I pay zakaat on my children’s savings and jewellery?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars and muftis of the mighty Shari’ah say regarding the following matter, do I pay Zakaat on the savings and jewellery belonging to my children? They are 5 and 8 years old.

Questioner: A sister from UK

ANSWER:

Assalāmu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakātuhu

There are conditions for Zakaat to become obligatory upon an individual and from amongst these is that he/she be an adult. [Bahār e Shariat V5]

Zakaat is not obligatory upon minors. Your children will only be obliged to pay Zakaat when they reach the age of puberty and wealth has remained within their possession for one year.
